(16) A short time later two prostitutes came to the king and stood in front of him. (17) One woman said to him, "Sir, this woman and I live in the same house. I gave birth to a son while she was with me in the house. (18) Two days later this woman also gave birth to a son. We were alone. No one else was with us. Just the two of us were in the house. (19) That night this woman's son died because she rolled over on top of him. (20) So she got up during the night and took my son, who was beside me, while I was asleep. She held him in her arms. Then she laid her dead son in my arms. (21) When I got up in the morning to nurse my son, he was dead! I took a good look at him and realized that he wasn't my son at all!" (22) The other woman said, "No! My son is alive-your son is dead." The first woman kept on saying, "No! Your son is dead-my son is alive." So they argued in front of the king. (23) The king said, "This one keeps saying, 'My son is alive-your son is dead,' and that one keeps saying, 'No! Your son is dead-my son is alive.'" (24) So the king told his servants to bring him a sword. When they brought it, (25) he said, "Cut the living child in two. Give half to the one and half to the other." (26) Then the woman whose son was still alive was deeply moved by her love for the child. She said to the king, "Please, sir, give her the living child. Please don't kill him!" But the other woman said, "He won't be mine or yours. Cut him in two." (27) The king replied, "Give the living child to the first woman. Don't kill him. She is his mother." (28) All Israel heard about the decision the king made. They respected the king very highly, because they saw he possessed wisdom from God to do what was right.

16 At that time two women, prostitutes, got to come in to the king and stand before him. 17 Then the one woman said: "Excuse me, my lord, I and this woman are dwelling in one house, so that I gave birth close by her in the house. 18 And it came about on the third day after I gave birth, this woman also proceeded to give birth. And we were together. There was no stranger with us in the house, no one but the two of us in the house. 19 Later the son of this woman died at night, because she lay upon him. 20 So she got up in the middle of the night and took my son from beside me while your slave girl herself was asleep and laid him in her own bosom, and her dead son she laid in my bosom. 21 When I got up in the morning to nurse my son, why, there he was dead. So I examined him closely in the morning, and, look! he did not prove to be my son that I had borne." 22 But the other woman said: "No, but my son is the living one and your son is the dead one!" All the while this woman was saying: "No, but your son is the dead one and my son is the living one." And they kept on speaking before the king. 23 Finally the king said: "This one is saying, 'This is my son, the living one, and your son is the dead one!' and that one is saying, 'No, but your son is the dead one and my son is the living one!'" 24 And the king went on to say: "You men, get me a sword." So they brought the sword before the king. 25 And the king proceeded to say: "You men, sever the living child in two and give the one half to the one woman and the other half to the other." 26 At once the woman whose son was the living one said to the king (for her inward emotions were excited toward her son, so that she said): "Excuse me, my lord! You men, give her the living child. Do not by any means put him to death." All the while this other woman was saying: "Neither mine nor yours will he become. You men, do the severing!" 27 At that the king answered and said: "You men, give her the living child, and you must by no means put him to death. She is his mother." 28 And all Israel got to hear of the judicial decision that the king had handed down; and they became fearful because of the king, for they saw that the wisdom of God was within him to execute judicial decision.

(17) One of them said, "Your Majesty, this woman and I live in the same house, and I gave birth to a baby boy at home while she was there. (18) Two days after my child was born, she also gave birth to a baby boy. Only the two of us were there in the house---no one else was present. (19) Then one night she accidentally rolled over on her baby and smothered it. (20) She got up during the night, took my son from my side while I was asleep, and carried him to her bed; then she put the dead child in my bed. (21) The next morning, when I woke up and was going to nurse my baby, I saw that it was dead. I looked at it more closely and saw that it was not my child." (22) But the other woman said, "No! The living child is mine, and the dead one is yours!" The first woman answered back, "No! The dead child is yours, and the living one is mine!" And so they argued before the king. (23) Then King Solomon said, "Each of you claims that the living child is hers and that the dead child belongs to the other one." (24) He sent for a sword, and when it was brought, (25) he said, "Cut the living child in two and give each woman half of it." (26) The real mother, her heart full of love for her son, said to the king, "Please, Your Majesty, don't kill the child! Give it to her!" But the other woman said, "Don't give it to either of us; go on and cut it in two." (27) Then Solomon said, "Don't kill the child! Give it to the first woman---she is its real mother." (28) When the people of Israel heard of Solomon's decision, they were all filled with deep respect for him, because they knew then that God had given him the wisdom to settle disputes fairly.
